It is evident that Salem Village's two factions differed in terms of size and characteristics. Only eighty-four signatures appeared on the anti-Parris petition, and over a dozen of these were young adults not of full legal age. More adult Salem Villagers endorsed Parris's conduct than condemned it.
Even including likely membership in churches other than in Salem Village (freeholders), the anti-Parris contingent was far less rooted in church membership than their opponents. Pro-Parris signers were almost evenly divided between church members and householders, but only about one quarter of Parris's opponents belonged to any church. The overwhelming majority of the anti-Parris petitioners were non-church members.
Anti-Parris petitioners were also overwhelmingly male compared to the Parris faction. Male opponents outnumbered female opponents by more than two-to-one. Even excluding young men, men still predominated in the anti-Parris group. Among women, there were significantly more anti-Parris householders than church members, in contrast the Parris's women supporters.
